What Hath We Wrought?

I felt the need to write this down while the subject matter was still fresh in everyone's minds, what with the recent shooting by a former student. The news wires and the blogosphere alike are already working feverishly to find solutions to what is increasingly being referred to as an "epidemic". I maintain that solutions may prove to be elusive since I also maintain that we created the problem in the first place. Since the very first moment that Man attained cognitive reasoning he has strived to improve virtually everything around him. There are those who would argue that the effort has not been without fault and collateral damage, and I would agree. Man was not designed to be perfect and we have no business trying to achieve perfection in an inarguably chaotic environment, but it seems we will never learn. Baby Boomers grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons. Most of us suffered no ill effects from the "carnage" we witnessed as Bugs Bunny shot Yosemite Sam ...

Lowering the Drinking Age in Tennessee

The question is, should Tennessee lower the drinking age to 18, and will it saves lives? Without getting into a right or wrong discussion with MADD, I will try to look at it from possibly saving lives down the road by introducing alcohol to young adults while they are possibly still at home and under adult supervision, and not away at college when they take their first drink. To date Middle Tennessee State University nor the University of Tennessee have come out with a formal stance to lower the drinking age in Tennessee, although I think they should, as they are aware it is prevalent on their campus. From my experiences in college I have seen binge drinking from persons who did not drink an alcoholic beverage at all while they were 18, and living at home while in high school, and I have also had friends who grew up around parents who drank a beer or wine in front of them and at age 18 drank some themselves. Of the two types of people, those who never drank before college and those who...

To Volunteer in Africa is Enriching For Everyone

A volunteer typically performs a service for free, but the value that happens in the giving of a service often is beyond the measure of money. Learning new skills and discovering more about who you are and what you want to do with the rest of your life is a fantastic reward. This is on top of the fact that you are helping others to improve their quality of life. The choice to volunteer in Africa can mean that you provide vital service to a community that would otherwise not have it. There are many well known business coaches and successful entrepreneurs who agree that in order to get ahead in life; you must help as many others along the way as you are able. There are as many reasons to do a service in Africa as there are people that take up the adventure. o Help others and make the world a better place o Desires for activism, self-exploration and building communities o Interest in various cultures, activities and international issues o Desire to have new and different experiences o Con...

Volunteer Africa Programs Powered by Celebs

Celebrities have in general always been more than willing to help out with local causes, but the very fact they get to travel the world more than the average American means they get to see firsthand what's going on in the world. It's tough for the media to soften the blow or filter the news when you are in the face of a real situation caused by poverty or terrorism. The trend for U.S, superstars to look beyond the borders of their native country for ways to help has been dubbed "the Angelina bump" or "celebrity globalization". Travelling for film shoots to foreign lands and exotic cities can't help but give an actor a healthy respect for the reality of cultural differences and how people are forced to exist in countries such as Africa. The world suddenly seems smaller and people that are suffering don't seem so far away. It was the grandmother of actress and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Tea Leoni that helped create the organizations that helps thousand...

Oprah's Drive For Volunteering in Africa

She is an exemplary role model for taking a stand and taking action to do something to help where it's really needed. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa will house and educate 150 deserving young African girls. It took the superstar talk show host about five years and $40 million to build the facility that according to her wishes, provides the best of everything for the young women. Oprah was partially motivated by the challenges she faced in her own childhood to build the school. Her longing to feel a strong personal connection to an act of charity was also an inspiration. She was driven to do something that would affect a real change in the lives of the African children. Through her Angel Network Oprah has been able raise substantial funding and volunteer efforts to help with the project. Ms. Winfrey faced many obstacles in the process of building the facility, but she was not to be stopped. Even when the local government withdrew...

How To Sell If You Hate Sales

If you want to be a successful person, whether it is a business venture, a job interview or to convince your boss to give you a raise, if you want to build successful relationships with people of the opposite sex, or in many other situations in life, you must free yourself from your preconceptions about the world of sales, it is worth your survival. Why People Hate Sales Most people have huge preconceptions about sales, often related to negative experiences with pushy telemarketers or shady car salespeople (By the way I have been a car salesman and a telemarketer myself and the majority of these people act with enormous integrity but unfortunately there are always the bad apples like in any other profession that negatively impact everybody else). When people think about sales, they often tend to imagine the typical car salesman wearing gold bracelets with his hairs slicked back, but successful salespeople are anything but this: In fact, when I think about successful salespeople I usual...
